
Skała Rogoźnicka - it’s an exceptional inanimate nature reserve. You will find here a geological site, unique on the European scale. The reserve was created in the old quarry and it protects the multicoloured calcareous rocks, originating from different geological periods. Mostly, you will stumble across limestones from the Upper Jurassic period which are around 170 million years old. Its characteristic red colour is created by the so-called Muschelkalk, which name indicates that the rock was formed by the sedimentation of large quantities of mussels, brachiopods, ammonites and other animal species that millions of years ago inhabited the warm seas covering the whole Podhale area. In 1989, the reserve was added to the geological UNESCO World Heritage Site list, as a high-class landmark of worldwide importance. More information at http://www.it.nowytarg.pl/node/127
