Janek Kráľ Museum
The museum presents the exhibition Chapters from the history of Liptovský Mikuláš, which showcases over 700 years of its history. You can learn here, why the St. Nicolaus’s church (kostol svätého Mikuláša) is so closely connected to the history of the city and see how it looked over the centuries. You will get to know the most popular Slovakian bandit, Juraj Jánošík, and the way he was executed. You will take a peek into a tanner’s workshop, but also the room of a romanticism poet Janek Král or a bourgeois dining room. The exhibit shows also the beginnings of sport and tourism in Liptov. In the end, you will travel back to the times of the Second World War, the transport of Jews and a difficult fight for the liberation of the city. The basement of the museum hides a small, but special exhibit - Jánošík torture room. Close to the place, where around 300 years ago the bandit Juraj Jánošík was executed, you can find the reports from his voluntary and “cruel” interrogation. Apart from seeing the historical torture devices, such as the Spanish boots or the rack, you can learn about the drastic torture methods used in Jánošík’s interrogation and about the times in which he lived.
