Travelling along the main course of the Route around the Tatras from Nowy Targ, after crossing Rogoźnik and Stare Bystre, just before the forest Sośnina (8 km), you will reach the forking of the route - going left, you will enter the Chochołów-summit route leading to Chochołów, which after further 14.2 km, joins the main route close to the Polish-Slovakian border.

This route, even though included in the “loop”, has more of an optional character of the main course, mostly due to its tract, as well as to its historical and cultural values (Chochołów buildings), scenic and landscape characteristics (wide panoramic views of all the mountain ranges surrounding Podhale, especially excellent view over Tatra mountains, Gubałówka foothills and Orava-Nowy Targ Basin) and the route being accessible to the bikers, runners and skiers.
The route ascends slightly, running through the fields overlooking the Rogoźnik stream valley, where Stare Bystre is located. Halfway through the route, by going uphill, you will reach the peak of Domański Wierch (748 m above sea level). The wayside chapel, another one that we pass, is an interesting sight, but the views are even more impressive. The panoramic view includes the peatlands of the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin and Babia Góra, overlooking Orava, Podhale range and the Gorce Mountains, and on the south, you will see the Tatra mountains emerging from behind the hills of the Gubałówka range.
Similar views will accompany you along the way to Chochołów. After Domański Wierch, the route crosses the local road (Targowa St.) leading from Czarny Dunajec to Ciche and Stare Bystre, which is also an alternative for bikers, who want to join the main route or reach the parking lot in Czarny Dunajec. The Chochołów-summit route leads further, to Zadki and Bory, where it crosses the short connecting route to Ciche Dolne, and joins the local road from Chochołów to Ciche, just to turn left after another 500 m. You will pass the cemetery and St Hyacinth’s church, reaching Chochołów's centre. We recommend stopping here to walk around the village, well-known due to its traditional wooden architecture. From the centre, you should continue towards the bridge on the Dunajec river, cross it, and enter the so-called, Borowa Route, which runs south through the Dunajec valley, joining the main route just 500 m before the Polish-Slovakian border.
Chochołów is a live heritage park of the regional architecture and a unique monument of an extraordinary value, which attracts many tourists from around the world. The wooden huts and highlanders’ farmhouses, built around the 18th and 19th century according to Podhale style of architecture, were claimed “zero class monuments” by UNESCO. Chochołów is one of the main tourist destinations in the area due to the number of accommodation facilities and the biggest thermal baths in Poland - “Termy chochołowskie” to be opened here in 2016.
This part of the route, besides the historical and cultural qualities, offers extraordinary scenic and landscape advantages (wide panoramic views of all the mountain ranges around Podhale, especially great view over the Tatra mountains). The whole Chochołów-summit path is equipped with directional signage and 5 informational boards about the Route around the Tatras, its unique values and places the route guides you through.
