Liptovská Mara is the biggest dam lake in Slovakia when it comes to volume. It was named after one of the inundated villages. It was created between 1970 and 1975 to minimise the flood hazard in the Váh basin and for energy production. During the construction of the dam, the villages in the basin were evicted and inundated. The water flooded also the historical monuments, however, the most valuable buildings were disassembled and moved to the open-air museum - Múzeum liptovskej dediny v Pribyline. Mara Camping in Liptovský Trnovec is the biggest leisure centre at the lake. The closeness of the beach, sports equipment rental, cruise ships’ port, excellent conditions for yachting and windsurfing make Liptovský Trnovec the centre of summer leisure, at the same time being the starting point of the hikes into the Chočské hory or Western Tatras. The summer season starts here in the middle of June and lasts till September. The cruises around the lake are part of the leisure offer as well. Close here you will also find the Aquapark Tatralandia (open year-round) with accommodation, and the thermal baths in Thermal Park Bešeňová.
